Four weeks have gone already since returning from our travels and summer certainly has been unrelenting this year. Pursuits of the active sort have been best undertaken early in the day or late afternoon. Walks have been very languid affairs, not covering the usual distances we like to undertake. Running is now back on schedule. After my unfortunate 'trip up' at the Race For Life I’ve been resting for a while. Part of me was a little concerned about tripping up again. Silly I know so I certainly gave myself a good talking too. Finally I managed a successful 4 K run without mishap and that really boosted my confidence. Today I was back up to 5K and trying to decide what my next challenge will be. Probably another 10K later this autumn, if I can find one.
My cousin has returned home and the house is quiet once again. Just a whole heap of old photos to work out and lots of happy memories shared. It’s lovely taking people round the island and seeing it through their eyes. Grosnez looked beautiful in the summer heat and Grayling butterflies were flitting everywhere, I’ve never seen so many in one spot, happily camouflaging themselves against the granite.
Fields have been harvested and stooks have appeared making a very midsummer scene. Down at St Catherine’s, sailboats sat at the water’s edge waiting for a journey round the bay. Red admirals were resting on dusty seed heads, almost saying it was too hot to move.
At the bottom of our garden the parish gardeners have left an area to become wild. It’s allowing lots of insect life to flourish especially the red soldier beetles. They create an orange fuzz as they fly from plant to plant. Inside the garden the snow berry bush continues to attract unusual visitors. This time a large skipper. Another new butterfly to add to my growing collection. Demoiselle dragonflies seem to be everywhere as do hummingbird hawk moths. An amazing sight to watch as they hover from flower to flower.
Whenever the tide is high we venture for a swim or kayak if time allows. Certainly a wonderful way to cool down. Schools have now finished and for once the weather has held for children to enjoy the beaches. Just walking along the waters edge dabbling our toes is a blissful occupation.
Finally a pair of socks I started about three months ago have been finished. They’ve travelled half way round Europe and Wales before completion. Youngest son is very happy to have another pair and is impressed that the wool came from Amsterdam. Another pair is now on the circular needle hopefully for yours truly.
Well time I put on some dinner for the family, they will be round shortly for an evening meal. I’ve got to that stage of craving for cooler weather so I can do some winter hearty meals. Any good suggestions for easy summer meals, that keeps everyone happy, including the meat eaters.
I’ll be back soon, still lots of photos to share from Italy and Wales. I haven’t forgotten.
