Diesel clothing has added a sensitive and inclusive touch to its new Spring 2014 campaign, which features a wheelchair-bound fashion editor and blogger as one of its models.
Disabled people are not usually considered as being either models or cover features for commercial ads, and this new campaign has thrown open a wide range of opportunities for the community with Diesel at the forefront. The cover girl, Jillian Mercado, suffers from muscular dystrophy and poses proudly in a denim dress with bright red lipstick and her stylish platinum blonde hair. Notably, the cover girl is featured with her electric wheelchair rather than without it, in order to bring forth the message of inclusivity rather than hide it.
Diesel’s artistic director, Nicola Formichetti, has clearly promoted the vision of “We Are Connected” with the objective of making an impact with the company’s considerable customer base. The decision to feature the wheelchair is a path breaking one, as Jillian Mercado explains, it hopes to give hope to disabled people who think that their lives are over because they have a disability. “You can totally do it, nothing should be stopping you”, is the intended message of this well designed, sensitive and well-directed campaign.
