"No Bad News" by Mathew V - Single Review

One year ago, Vancouver native Mathew V released the enticing, soulful pop experiment "I'm A Bitch", a feminist-inspired, upbeat track that took an usually vulgar word with a negative connotation and shined an alternative, positive light onto it. However, now that infamous single is nowhere to be found, and the aspiring independent artist has moved forward with a brand new "debut single", the equally as soulful and impressive "No Bad News". With a strong, dramatic vocal performance at the forefront, it's a fresh beginning to a promising career.

"No Bad News" can immediately draw comparisons to the work of English synth-pop artist Frankmusik, right down to the production theatrics and smooth progression. What sets Mathew V apart from other artists, however, is a rich vocal delivery that sounds surprising coming from a 19-year-old. The emotive, Sam Smith-like performance carries the new R&B-leaning song to exciting heights, putting the focus on an engaging, relatable story with some appreciated heart.

After getting his young heart broken a few times, Mathew V appears nervous, wondering if the same result will come with his current flame. However, just because the artist is a bit more cautious this time around, don't expect him to take any disrespect lightly. "Cuz you are just a silly boy, that's playing with fire, but just know you'll get burned if you hurt me, and think it's alright," he boldly declares on a captivating bridge detailing his new found strength.

Nobody wants to deal with the bad news of a relationship that's coming to an end. Mathew V is changing the tide on "No Bad News", standing up and shielding himself from the hurt that has caused pain in the past. The artist will no longer be stepped on, will not put up with the deceitful lies, or turned a blind eye to a man who does not appreciate his worth. There's a sense of confidence coming from the commanding performance and narrative songwriting detailing the desire for a not-so-perfect rebound.

Though "I'm A Bitch" and follow up single "Can't Wait to Forget" appear to have been erased from existence, the recently released "No Bad News" represents the growth and maturity necessary in order for an independent artist to expand to potential mainstream exposure. The track showcases immense determination and countless hours of hard work from someone who deserves to be heard. Just don't go breaking his heart, Mathew V will no longer stand for it.
